REAL ID Là Gì và Khi Nào Cần
REAL ID bắt đầu enforcement ngày 7/5/2025 cho domestic flights và một số federal facilities. Nhiều cô chú bác vẫn dùng passport mỗi lần bay thăm con ở Seattle hoặc Texas; REAL ID giúp nhẹ hơn. Lỗi tôi nghe nhiều nhất là thiếu linkage document khi đổi tên sau marriage, divorce hoặc naturalization.

Thời gian xử lý
Apply online tại dmv.ca.gov, then visit DMV office với documents, 30-60 phút office time. Card mail trong 60 ngày.
Tài liệu / Yêu cầu
- Original birth certificate, US passport, OR permanent resident card (legal presence proof)
- Social Security card hoặc W-2 hoặc paystub showing full SSN
- 2 proof of California residency (different documents)
- Current name change documents (marriage certificate, divorce decree, court order) if name on docs differs from current name
Các bước thực hiện
- Bước 1: Determine if cần REAL ID, needed for: domestic flights starting May 7, 2025; entering federal facilities; military bases. NOT needed for: state ID purposes, driving, voting, social security, federal court.
- Bước 2: Pre-apply online tại realid.dmv.ca.gov, gather list of required documents.
- Bước 3: Make appointment.
- Bước 4: Bring ALL original documents, DMV does not accept photocopies for REAL ID.
- Bước 5: DMV scan documents + take photo + thumbprint.
- Bước 6: Pay fee. Receive interim paper license.
- Bước 7: Plastic REAL ID card mail trong 60 ngày, distinguishable bằng gold/silver star ở góc trên phải.
Lỗi thường gặp
- Foreign birth certificate hoặc name document không bằng tiếng Anh có thể cần bản dịch English theo yêu cầu DMV.
- Tên trên birth certificate khác tên hiện tại (sau marriage, divorce, naturalization), phải bring linkage documents.
- AB 60 license holders, KHÔNG eligible cho REAL ID vì không có legal presence proof. Vẫn có regular CA license.
- Passport hoặc legal-presence document phải đáp ứng checklist hiện hành của DMV; đừng assume expired document sẽ được chấp nhận.
Liên quan đến bảo hiểm
REAL ID không làm premium rẻ hơn. Nó chỉ giúp identity verification gọn hơn khi update policy, ký e-sign hoặc làm claim online. Insurance vẫn dựa vào license status, address, vehicle, driver record và carrier underwriting.
